Abstract:

It is estimated that employee fatigue and other cognitive impairment is the primary cause of 30% of all industrial accidents including fatalities and estimated to be a major contributor in as high as 60% of all accidents in 24/7 operations involving shiftwork and off-shift call outs. Effective impairment management programs are needed to address human behavior through education and training.

Fatigue has long been recognized as the most common type of impairment, and industries are beginning to become aware of it as a physical condition, not just something a person can “will” their way through.  We’ve all experienced the distraction of a stressful life and can understand the occasion when life comes to work with us, distracting us beyond our ability to focus.  At the same time, there is a growing need to monitor impairment that correlates with real-time risk, as our culture is changing in ways that makes it difficult to use conventional impairment detection methods.  What do you do when marijuana is legalized as a recreational drug in your state, and traces of the substance stay in body fluids for as long as 30 days?  Carol will share stories of companies who are struggling with this and other issues in their efforts to stay relevant and keep workers safe.
